The Reset Ladder Methodology

Last Updated: April 27, 2026

Reset Ladder is built around a single principle: most attempts to quit porn fail because they rely on willpower at the exact moments when willpower is weakest. The methodology is designed to work even when motivation is low.

The Ladder

The core idea is a ladder of strictness levels. Instead of a binary “abstinent or relapsed” state, you operate at one of three levels:

  • Light: allows occasional use within a defined window
  • Medium: stricter limits, longer reset cycles
  • Strict: no use at all, longest reset cycle

You start where you are, not where you wish you were. Most people benefit from starting at Light or Medium and tightening over time.

Cycles, not streaks

Traditional recovery apps use streak counters. A single slip resets the streak to zero. This sounds motivating but it has a destructive side effect: every relapse becomes a total failure, which triggers the shame spiral that causes the next relapse.

Reset Ladder uses cycles instead. A cycle is a defined period of clean days at your current strictness level. A slip does not erase prior cycles — it ends the current one and starts a new one. Progress is measured in completed cycles over time, not in the length of any single streak.

Gradual reduction, not cold turkey

Cold turkey works for some people. For most, it fails on a specific kind of night — when energy is low, sleep is short, and the rationalization shows up. After the first cold-turkey relapse, shame collapses the streak.

Gradual reduction handles this differently. The goal is not perfection on the worst possible night. The goal is a clear downward trend in frequency over months. A single slip does not destroy the plan.

Trigger awareness

Each slip is logged with its trigger. Over time, the patterns become visible: certain hours, certain moods, certain environments. This data is local to the device — no cloud sync, no tracking. The user is the only one who sees it.

Privacy-first by design

All data stays on the device. No accounts. No cloud. No analytics. The app is designed to be useful without ever knowing who you are.

What this is not

This is not clinical addiction treatment. It is not a substitute for therapy. If you are dealing with severe symptoms or co-occurring conditions, please consult a licensed mental health professional.

This is a tool for people who want a structured, secular, non-shame approach to reducing or quitting porn — and who have found that streak-based apps and willpower-based approaches do not work for them.
